a Step by Step Process

Commissioning a portrait is usually a new experience for my customers and can often feel a bit like a leap into the unknown! To help guide you through the process the following information may be of use to you.

LET’S Have a Chat

This initial chat is important as I will give you an insight on the process and what is required from you. There is absolutely NO obligation if after our first conversation you feel a drawing or painting is not for you. If you DO decide to go ahead, I will ask for a 20% deposit once I have received the agreed photograph.

Ideally I will need a 4 week lead time to complete a portrait. However, if you have a special occasion, let me know as I may be able to ‘slot’ you in.

Send me a PHOTO

Between us, let’s choose the right photograph. This is the most important part of the process and probably the most difficult job you have to do! It is imperative the image is as clear as possible and preferably close up. The photograph on the right is just about acceptable (this is the clearest shot we had of my late father; I drew him in a weekend so that we could include it on the Order of Service at his funeral) - more clarity, however, would be even better.

When you have a selection of pictures you think may be suitable, email them over to me and we can make a decision together. It can often take some time to agree on the image I use so don’t be disheartened if I ask you to take more!

Drawing

Once we have agreed on the photo it is then over to me! Once I am at a stage where I feel the portrait is finished, I will (if you wish) email or WhatsApp you a photograph of the artwork. 100% of my clients have been delighted with the result at this stage! I do need to say however, that a photograph of the drawing is NEVER as good as the original artwork.
